COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Well done to Thurles Sarsfields and Drom and Inch on qualifying for the County Senior Hurling championship final to be played in Semple Stadium on October 18th. Commiserations to Toomevara and Upperchurch Drombane, they both met better teams on the day but both contributed a lot to the 2009 championship.
The 2009 final will be a repeat of the 2005 final which Sarsfields won by 1-17 to 0-15 on October 16th. The goal was scored by Wayne Cully. It was Sarsfields’ 29th title and their first since 1974. Ger “Redser” O’Grady was captain and lined out at left half forward – he scored 0-3. Their other scorers were Johnny Enright 0-6, Wayne Cully 1-2, Richie Ruth 0-3, Pat Lalor, Stephen Lillis, and Eddie Enright 0-1 each. Drom’s top man and Man of the Match award winner was Seamus Butler who scored 0-11 (0-7 frees) with the other scorers being James Woodlock 0-2 and Ml Butler, K Butler 0-1 each. The referee was Brian White and the attendance was in excess of 12,000. Interestingly since the Dan Breen Cup was first presented in 1931 a final has never been played on October 18th.
