Mid-West Regional Business Week will take place from Monday 5th – Friday 9th October 2009 with an extensive programme of seminars, workshops, networking events and expos addressing relevant business topics.

This concerted, combined initiative will take place across the mid-west, with the regions development agencies and statutory authorities hosting a wide range of events relative to their particular area of expertise.

Speaking at the launch Jimmy Feane, Chairman of Limerick County Enterprise Board stated that the “holding of this event is sending a clear and positive message to the small and medium sector that the Enterprise Boards in partnership with Enterprise Ireland have an all hands on deck approach to the real challenges being faced by the sector in the current climate”.

The Chairman continued to state that “when the Enterprise Boards were established over 15 years ago their remit was to be proactive and innovative and responsive to the needs of enterprises at a local level and it is fair to say that such an approach is needed now more than ever”.

Mid-West Regional Business Week will be sponsored by Bank of Ireland, affirming their commitment to support the survival of small to medium enterprises (SMEs).

Speaking at the launch Denis Minihane, Bank of Ireland’s Regional Business Manager – West Munster stated that “Bank of Ireland are delighted to support the County and City Enterprise Boards Business Week. COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

There are now 12 teams remaining in the County Senior Hurling Championship and that will be reduced to 8 after the 4 games to be played this weekend. There is an attractive double header in Templemore on Saturday evening where Portroe will take on Upperchurch Drombane at 3.45pm and Toomevara will play Killenaule at 5.30pm. Portroe and Upperchurch were defeated in their respective divisional finals in the North and Mid Divisions in what was the first appearance for both clubs in a divisional final. Both will feel they have a good chance to progress to the County Quarter finals in what should be a close encounter. The meeting of defending county champions Toomevara with beaten South Division finalists Killenaule will be seen as the clash of the round and both teams come into the game on foot of comprehensive wins last weekend. On Sunday at 1pm Seamus Ó Riain Cup finalists Kilruane MacDonaghs will play last year’s county finalists Thurles Sarsfields in Dolla at 1pm and at 5.30pm in Nenagh, Borris-Ileigh, following an impressive win over Loughmore-Castleiney last Sunday, will face the other Ó Riain Cup finalists, Lorrha and Dorrha.

The 4 winners will go into a draw with the 4 divisional champions, Clonoulty Rossmore, Drom and Inch, Mullinahone and Nenagh Éire Óg, to decide the quarter final pairings. The divisional champions will be kept apart for the draw and there will be no repeat pairings if possible. The quarter finals will be played on the weekend of September 26th and 27th.

UPCOMING FIXTURES

The weekend of September 26th and 27th will be a busy one with the County Senior Football, Intermediate Football and Intermediate Hurling quarter finals all scheduled to be played in addition to the Senior Hurling quarter finals. It may not be possible to play all the games that weekend because some clubs may be involved in more than one set of quarter finals.

TIPPERARY GAA ARCHIVES WEB SITE

On this coming Saturday, a new Tipperary GAA Archives web site will be launched at the Anner Hotel Thurles by County Chairman Barry O’Brien. From Saturday, this web site will be linked from the Tipperary GAA web site at http://tipperary.gaa.ie and will include a list of every player who was part of a Tipperary Championship team from Minor up to Senior level in Hurling and Football since 1886. The list of over 17,000 players was compiled over the past couple of years by PJ Maxwell, former Tipperary underage hurler and captain of the Tipperary team which won the 1980 Munster Under 21 Hurling Final. Thanks to the assistance of the clubs, over 90% of the players will include the correct Christian name also.

The new web site will also include the Divisional and County Championship Roll of Honour for all grades in Hurling and Football from Minor C grade all the way up to Senior since each competition began. This list was compiled by former County PRO Ed Donnelly from numerous sources and again, thanks to the assistance of the clubs, the name of the winning captain is included for over 75% of all County Champions.

All of the above information can be found on various publications which invariably get out of date with each passing year. With the assistance of former Tipperary All-Star hurler Mark O’Leary who set up the web site and supporting database, the use of modern technology will ensure that not only can the information be easily searched online, the web site can be updated in real-time and includes all teams and champions up to and including last weekend’s Divisional finals at Minor, Junior and Intermediate level.

This project was sponsored by the committee set up to organise events for the 125th Anniversary of the GAA, led by Seamus J. King who will chair the launch on Saturday. Thanks to everyone involved, including the Tipperary GAA County Board for funding this project. Why not check out the Tipperary GAA web site from this coming Saturday and delve through the unique history of Tipperary Hurling and Football? We would love to hear from all interested Gaels in relation to the information put together – please contact Ed Donnelly at ed.donnelly@gaa.ie or 087-2055642 with your feedback.

Well done to PJ, Ed and Mark on this initiative. It has required painstaking research and will be a very valuable reference point for anybody interested in Tipperary GAA.

Child Welfare & Protection in Sport Training

North Tipperary Sports Partnership will be running a number of workshops on child welfare and protection in sport in the coming weeks and months. A Basic Awareness workshop will take place in the Abbey Court Hotel Nenagh on Monday September 21st and Thursday September 24th from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The course is aimed at sports leaders, children’s officers, parents or anyone working with young people in sport. A central goal for all those involved in sport for young people is to provide a safe, positive and nurturing environment where children can develop and enhance their physical and social skills. Promoting a child-centred environment should go hand in hand with identifying and eliminating practices that impact negatively on safe and enjoyable participation in sport for young people. The workshop will be delivered by John McElhinney, Irish Sports Council tutor. Further workshops will be held on Tuesday October 6th in the Tipperary Institute and on Wednesday November 11th in The Templemore Arms Hotel from 6pm to 10pm. Prior registration with North Tipperary Sports Partnership is necessary. A nominal fee of €10 is required to secure a place. A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded on completion of the course. For further information and booking please contact Elaine Cullinan or Sharon Mc Loughney (tel: 067-43604, email: info@ntsp.ie).

Guitarist Peter Miller at Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Sunday, 27 September

Guitarist Peter Miller plays at Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Sunday, 27 September

Australian finger-style guitarist Peter Miller brings his mellow,
contemplative music to Cloughjordan for a free gig at Sheelagh na Gig
bookshop on Sunday, 27 September at 3pm.

Finger-style guitarists pluck the guitar strings directly with the
fingertips. Common in many style of music, the casual listener will
recognise it particularly in classical and flamenco, where the
technique allows the guitar full expression as a solo instrument with
as much range and harmony as a piano.

Peter Miller adapts this style to produce peaceful songs that make for
perfect Sunday afternoon listening. This is your only opportunity to
see Peter in Tipperary: his tour next takes him to Cork, where he will
be playing with John Spillane in Clonakilty.

For more information, contact Sheelagh na Gig bookshop on 0505 42123.

HSE Community Games National Finals, Tipperary Results

Co. Tipperary HSE Community Games

Athlone was a buzz with excitement and expectations over the two weekends of the HSE Community Games National Finals. Following a very successful festival in May, everyone was looking forward to excellent competition and enjoyment for the supporters and children attending. For some it was a first visit to the new venue, and for others it was a return journey to Athlone Institute of Technology. It was also the first time that a lot of participants would have been awarded the new HSE National Community Games pewter medal for 4th place.

The weekends got off to a fine start on Friday evening, with a very colourful and exceptional parade.  The atmosphere was electric and the venue, Athlone Institute of Technology, was a hype of activity and fun.  Unfortunately weather conditions were mixed for the vast number of children participating in the track and field events with the Tag Rugby and Camogie finals being deferred for a future date. All the Co. Tipperary competitors were determined to give of their best and there is a potential future Olympian among them.  None more so than Michael O’Loughlin from Carrick on Suir who won the Boys U-14 2km cycling on grass event by a comprehensive margin.  The Girls U-12 team from St. Peter’s & Paul’s of Clonmel retained their Skittles crown, beating Monaghan 228 to 271 in the semi-final and Sligo 157 to 315 in the Final.  In the swimming events Meadbh Meehan Grey from Thurles finished 2nd in her Breaststroke heat to qualify for the semi-final and Sinead Compton from Ballinahinch/Killoscully won her heat of the Butterfly, came 3rd in her semi-final and just finished outside the medals in an extremely competitive final.

In the boy’s field events, local boy Dan Finnerty from Ballina qualified for the final of the U-16 Discus where he eventually finished in 6th place.  Dan is following in his father Dennis’ footsteps by representing Co. Tipperary at National level in Community Games.  Dan was the County’s first Discus thrower at the new venue of AIT, while his father Dennis was Tipperary’s first Hurdler at what was then the new venue of Mosney 35years ago.  On the track Darragh Shelly of Grangemockler finished 3rd in the U-12 100m with Darren Prout of Ballingarry 4th in the U-14 Hurdles and received the new 4th place pewter medal.  Jack Fallon from Moycarkey/Borris who qualified for the semi-final of the U-10 200m was unlucky not to make it through to the final, however, this is Jack’s first year at U-10 which would signify his potential for next year.  Tom Hennessey from Ballinahinch/Killoscully was 4th in his semi-final of the U-14 800m and qualified for the final where he finished strongly.  Alan Ryan of Tipperary Town was unlucky to finish outside the medals in the U-16 1500m.  The U-14 4x100m relay team from Silvermines who were coached by local stalwart Sean Finn qualified for the semi-final where they ran very well.

Nenagh girl Olivia Moylan had a very busy weekend running in both the U-10 100m and 4x100m mixed relay.  Despite finishing very strongly in her individual 100m race Olivia was very unlucky not to come home with a medal.  The U-10 4x100m mixed relay of Alannah Deering, Ronan Costello, Matthew Hodgins, Brona O’Sullivan and Eoin Coffey from Nenagh with whom Olivia ran made it to the semi-final. U-8 60m athlete Louise Fallon from Mullinahone also made it to the Final as did Laura O’Dwyer of Tipperary Town in the U-10 200m.  The girls U-12 relay team of Amy White, Faith Quigley, Maeve Coffey, Hazel Coffey, Laura Costello and Aoife Deering came 4th in their heat to qualify for the semi-final.  Our U-16 relay team from Newport had a fantastic series of runs and showed their experience to finish in 5th place in an extremely competitive race.  The girls were delighted with their finishing.  Sinead Buckley from Annacarty came 3rd in the U-12 Ball Throw.  Clodagh Fitzgerald from Carrick on Suir who is coached by County Manager and internationally recognised coach Emby Walsh qualified for the final.  Claire Hogan from St. Flannan’s finished 9th in the U-16 Javelin final.

Tipperary were also represented on the Official side by Mick England (Roscrea) who co-ordinated the Shot Putt, Discus and Javelin Finals, Richard Fogarty Gortnahoe/Glengoole who officiated at the High Jump & Long Jump.  Enda Mullally (Roscrea), Ann-Marie Hayes & Laura Healy all worked tirelessly on the gate and Corina Kennedy also from Roscrea with the Finance committee.

All IRELAND SENIOR HURLING FINAL

Well done to the Tipperary Senior Hurling team and management on their great performance against Kilkenny in last Sunday’s All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final in Croke Park. While they just came up short in their quest to bring the Liam McCarthy Cup back to Tipperary, all Tipperary people were very proud and heartened by their great display in what all commentators have described as a truly great final.  The team received a great reception at the banquet for them hosted by the Tipperary Association Dublin in the Burlington Hotel in Dublin on Sunday night. We are grateful to the Tipperary Association for their customary welcome and hospitality and to all those who attended the banquet. On Monday evening the team returned to Thurles by train and received a magnificent welcome from several thousand Tipperary supporters at Semple Stadium. We would like to thank all the players, Liam Sheedy, Eamon O’Shea and Michael Ryan and their backroom team for all their hard work and dedication over the last 9 months. Theirs is a massive commitment and we are also grateful to their families for supporting them so well and enabling them to make the time to dedicate to Tipperary. Well done to them all.

We are very grateful to all the people who purchased tickets for the draw and also to all those who sold them. It was a great effort over a short space of time.

MOYCARKEY-BORRIS WIN KILMACUD CROKES ALL-IRELAND SENIOR HURLING SEVENS

Congratulations to Moycarkey-Borris on winning the annual Meteor Kilmacud Crokes All-Ireland Senior Hurling 7’s competition which took place on Saturday last. The domination of last year’s competition by Tipperary clubs where Nenagh Eire Og defeated Portroe in the final with Kilruane MacDonaghs and Toomevara getting to the semi-finals only served as a motivating factor for the 12 Tipperary clubs who were among the 40 entries for the 2009 event. In Group 1, Burgess defeated Boherlahan-Dualla by 5-13 to 2-10 in the first match and Burgess went on to defeat Killeagh (Cork) and Carnmore (Galway) to qualify for the Quarter-Finals as Group 1 winners. Boherlahan-Dualla drew with Carnmore and lost out to Killeagh in the other games in Group 1. In Group 2, Nenagh Eire Og accounted for Na Fianna (Dublin), O’Donovan Rossa (Antrim) and Raparees (Wexford) by an average winning margin of 14 points to easily top the group. In Group 3, Moycarkey-Borris defeated UCC in their first match before defeating Toomevara by 6-5 to 5-6 in a thriller. Moycarkey defeated St. Brigids (Dublin) in their third game to qualify as Group 3 winners. Toomevara defeated St. Brigids and UCC to finish second. In Group 4, Templederry Kenyons were unlucky to lose to Cloyne by three points in their first match and easily accounted for Tullaroan (Kilkenny) and Shelmaliers (Wexford) in their other two matches. However, Cloyne qualified as Group winners. In Group 5, Borrisokane lost out to eventual group winners Raheny in their first game before losing to Ballyhea (Cork) and Ballyhale Shamrocks (Kilkenny). In Group 6, Mullinahone defeated Courcey Rovers (Cork) and Knockainey (Limerick) before losing out to Faythe Harriers (Wexford) by 1 point in their last match. In Group 7, Kilruane MacDonaghs and JK Brackens both defeated Youghal (Cork) and the host club Kilmacud Crokes (Dublin) to set up a winner takes all clash in their third game which Kilruane won by 9-3 to 4-8. In Group 9, Carrick Swan and Cashel King Cormacs both lost to Bishopstown (Cork) and eventual group winners Cratloe (Clare). Carrick Swan defeated Cashel by 9-4 to 2-3 in the game between the two Tipperary sides.

And so four Tipperary clubs qualified for the Quarter-Finals with Burgess getting knocked out at this stage by Nenagh Eire Og on a scoreline of 4-16 to 1-7. Moycarkey-Borris defeated Cloyne by 3-8 to 1-3 and Kilruane MacDonaghs accounted for Raheny by 5-7 to 1-5 in the other Quarter-Finals involving Tipperary clubs. Ballinhassig (Cork) defeated Cratloe (Clare) by 2-8 to 1-9 in the last Quarter-Final. The Semi-Finals were close affairs with Moycarkey-Borris defeating Nenagh Eire Og by 1-15 to 1-12 in the first semi-final after a cracking game before Kilruane MacDonaghs defeated Ballinhassig (Cork) by 4-9 to 2-9. And so the showcase event of the day saw Moycarkey-Borris and Kilruane MacDonaghs fight out a high scoring final just five weeks after the teams had met in the Seamus O’Riain Cup back home. Moycarkey had the wind in the first half and led by four points at the interval. Kilruane reduced the lead to two points with seven minutes remaining before a strong finish saw Moycarkey-Borris securing victory by 8-11 to 4-15. Moycarkey-Borris captain Pat Carey accepted the cup on behalf of his team while Moycarkey goalkeeper John Kelly won the Player of the Tournament award.

Moycarkey-Borris became the seventh Tipperary club to win this competition following in the footsteps of Borris-Ileigh (1976, 1978, 1987, 1997 and 2000), Nenagh Eire Og (1996 and 2008), Mullinahone (2002 and 2005), Roscrea (1979), Kilruane MacDonaghs (1984) and Portroe (1999). Well done to all concerned who made it a memorable day for everyone present from Tipperary, supplying all in attendance with some outstanding displays of Sevens Hurling. Check out the Kilmacud Crokes web site for more details and photos from the day at www.kilmacudcrokes-hurling.com.

SHANNON ROVERS WIN ST. JUDES JUNIOR HURLING SEVENS

Congratulations to Shannon Rovers on winning the Bord Gais Energy St Judes Junior Hurling Sevens on Saturday last in an all Tipperary final against Emly on Saturday last. Shannon Rovers, Emly and Sean Treacys represented the Premier County. In Group 1, Sean Treacys lost to Diarmuid O Mathuna’s, drew with Padraig Pearses and defeated Faughs and Ballela to qualify for the Shield knock-out stages. In Group 3, Shannon Rovers defeated Modeligo, St Brigids (Dublin), Killavilla and Kildimo to qualify for the Cup Quarter-Final. In Group 4, Emly accounted for Ferrybank, Thomas Davis and Salthill Knocknacarra to also qualify for the Cup Quarter-Final.

In the Shield competition, Sean Treacys defeated Modeligo (Waterford) and Killavilla (Offaly) in the Quarter-Final and Semi-Final respectively to qualify for the Shield Final where they met Thomas Davis (Dublin). In a keenly contested final, both teams began in determined fashion and were level at 1-1 apiece in the opening four minutes, with Anto Deasy netting for the Tallaght outfit. However a hat-trick of first-half goals, including a brace from Eamonn Ryan paved the way to a first ever title for Sean Treacy’s on a scoreline of 3-8 to 1-2.

In the knockout stages of the Cup competition, Shannon Rovers defeated Diarmuid O’Mathuna’s (Cork) and Padraig Pearses (Galway) to qualify for the final. Emly got the better of Newry Shamrocks (Down) and the host club St Jude’s (Dublin) to also get through to the final. In a keenly contested decider, a brace of Roy Darcy goals proved to be the main difference at the interval as Shannon Rovers claimed a 2-4 to 0-2 half-time advantage. In blustery conditions Emly upped their game after half-time and attacked strongly, despite conceding a Padraic O’Meara goal within 30 seconds of the restart. Emly pressed hard with their goalkeeper Mike Richardson playing more of an out-field role. Trailing by 3-5 to 0-2, Emly only conceded two points in the closing eight minutes, as Pat Buckley, James Ryan and Mike Ring tried their utmost to claw back the lead, but Rovers held too much in reserve and the North Tipperary side won out on a scoreline of 3-7 to 1-6 to become the fifth Tipperary club to earn Cup honours. It was a double success for Shannon Rovers, as Jamie Burke took the coveted Bord Gais Energy ‘Laoch an Lae’ award. The Rovers goalkeeper follows in the illustrious steps of current Tipperary net-minder Brendan Cummins who picked up the award in 2004.

All IRELAND SENIOR HURLING FINAL

We wish our senior hurlers and team management every success for Sunday’s All Ireland hurling final against 4 in a row seeking Kilkenny. This is Tipperary’s first All Ireland final appearance since 2001 and there is huge interest throughout the county and beyond in the game. 68,515 people attended the 2001 final between Tipperary and Galway which was a full house at the time because the building of the new Croke Park was not fully completed. There is no doubt there will be more than 80,000 there on Sunday. It will be the first championship encounter between the counties since 2003 and the first All Ireland final contest between them since 1991. It’s the third competitive encounter between them this year following the league game in Nowlan Park and the League Final in Thurles. The general consensus is that the final features the two best teams in the country with Kilkenny starting as clear favourites as they make their 8th appearance this decade in a final and seek their 7th win, their only defeat coming in 2004 to Cork. However, this is an improving Tipperary team and there is no doubt they will represent the county well on hurling’s biggest day of the year.

Thanks also to all the clubs and people who sold tickets and to the organising committee for running such a successful fund raising event.

Come along and get the All Ireland weekend off to a winning start with local club Durlas Óg.

COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

The weekend of September 12th and 13th will be a big weekend for the county senior hurling championship with 6 games in the first round of the Dan Breen Cup and the semi-finals of the Seamus Ó Riain Cup taking place. In the Dan Breen Cup games there will be 3 double headers – in Boherlahan on Saturday 12th, Ballybacon Grange v Portroe is at 4pm and Toomevara v Carrick Swans is at 5.45pm; in Templemore on Sunday September 13th Upperchurch Drombane v Cappawhite is at 2pm and Borris-Ileigh v Loughmore Castleiney is at 3.45pm and in Cashel also on Sunday 13th, Golden Kilfeacle v Killenaule is at 2pm and Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams v Thurles Sarsfields is at 3.45pm. The first Seamus Ó Riain Cup semi-final will take place between Kilruane MacDonaghs and Roscrea in Toomevara at 6pm on Saturday 12th and the second between Kildangan and Lorrha / Dorrha will be in Nenagh at 2pm on Sunday 13th. Any of the eight games ending in a draw will go to extra time.

U-16 and U-14 All Ireland Champions

Congratulations to the Tipperary under 16 team and mentors on their victory over Galway in the final of the Tipperary Supporters Club All Ireland U-16 final in Semple Stadium last Sunday and also to the under 14 team and mentors which won the Tony Forristal All Ireland U-14 final in Waterford, defeating the host county in the final. Well done also to Tipperary Bord na nOg for organising the U-16 tournament and to the clubs in South Tipperary which hosted the round robin games and semi-finals on Satuday.

BEST CLUB UNDER THE SUN

Drom & Inch is seeking the support of Tipperary Gaels in its bid to become the “Best Club under the Sun”. The Mid Tipp club has reached the final four of the competition, which is sponsored by Etihad Airways and is promoted by TG4’s Seó Spóirt. An online vote to determine the winner will run until Wednesday, September 9th, with a prize of a team training camp in Abu Dhabi with Tipperary legend Nicky English on offer. But the club faces stiff competition from St. Brigids and Lucan Sarsfields of Dublin and Rathnure of Wexford, and indeed are the only non-Leinster club in contention. A strong showing from Tipperary people could help Drom-Inch to win this valuable prize. Last year’s competition was won by All Ireland club hurling champions Portumna from Co. Galway with Kildangan being a close runner-up. To cast your vote for Drom-Inch simply log on to www.etihadgaa.ie and don’t forget the rapidly approaching closing date of September 9th.
