One company’s waste is another company’s resource

The Mid-West Regional Authority has recently become part of a National Network focusing on the concept of Industrial Ecology, where ‘One Company’s Waste is another Company’s Resource’.  The Network comprises representatives from the Regional Authorities, EPA, Regional Waste Management Offices and Supply Network Shannon.

Industrial Ecology, also referred to as Industrial Symbiosis, involves the reuse of energy, waste materials, products, by-products and so forth. Industrial Symbiosis leads to a reduction in the amount of waste materials being sent to landfills and the creation of industrial and broader societal networks of groups and individuals partaking in a cost saving/competitiveness initiative and green schemes.

The commercial justification behind waste reuse is that it increases a business’s competitiveness. In order to increase a business’s cost efficiencies, its material reuse and recycling, and to create a more cost competitive and attractive regional location, the notion of establishing a coordinated network of businesses who exchange waste, information, expertise and services is very appealing.  There are a number of waste exchange programmes running in the country and a great opportunity exists for setting up a Pilot Project in the Mid-West region.

For example MacroomE, a private limited company in the south west region, in cooperation with the Cork Local Authorities and Cork Enterprise Boards has established www.wastematchers.com whereby Households and Businesses can exchange waste.  In Dublin, the Local Authorities have set-up a ‘Free Trade’ facility on www.dublinwaste.ie enabling households/individuals dispose of no longer wanted goods.

The Mid-West Regional Authority, with the business sector agencies cooperation, would like to set up a Regional Pilot in the Mid-West whereby businesses can avail of a waste exchange programme, similar to that of MacroomE.  In this regard, we have prepared a brief survey that we would like businesses in the region to complete in order to gage possible interest and opportunities for a Waste Exchange Programme in the Mid-West region.

The survey is now available online at: http://www.mwra.ie/Tourism_and_Economic_Development/IndustrialEcology.shtml

and will only take 10 minutes to complete.   The survey will be available online until Friday 11th September 2009.

North Tipp Wheelers results 6th Aug

The third in a series of Points Sprint Races was held last Thursday evening, the 6th August by popular request of the riders concerned. The route remained the same – the straight between Donal Ryan’s roundabout and the one at the end of the bypass – a round distance of 2 miles. There were ten sprints in all, five with a long sprint and five with a short burst as we try to please all types of riders! This
week we had four guest riders – Alan Loftus and Patrick Rohan from Limerick CC, René Van Dam from Cycling Pursuits and Conor Ryan.
Once again, the strongest sprinter from the club was Shane Scully, taking his second consecutive victory with 44 points – just six off maximum. Eamon Hartnett, riding this type of race for the first time came second with 35 points and Paul Lenihan was third with 32 points.

ALL IRELAND SENIOR HURLING SEMI-FINAL

Best of luck to our senior hurlers and team management for their All Ireland hurling semi-final against Limerick in Croke Park on Sunday next, August 16th at 3.30pm. Victory will mean a first All Ireland senior final appearance since 2001. Old rivals Limerick will not be easy to overcome and a close encounter is the forecast of most commentators.

TICKETS FOR TIPP V LIMERICK

Tickets for Tipperary v Limerick are available through clubs, from Lár na Páirce in Thurles up to 5pm on Saturday, and on Ticketmaster, www.ticketmaster.ie. Adult tickets are €45 each. Family tickets are €45 per adult and €5 per juvenile. Hill 16 tickets are €30.

TEAM CHANGES SINCE THE 2007 TRILOGY

The meeting of Limerick and Tipperary on Sunday will be their first championship encounter since the 2007 trilogy of games in the Munster Championship. Two years ago, it took over four hours of hurling to separate the counties after three matches with both replays going to extra time before Limerick won the second replay by 0-22 to 2-13. Just over two years later, it is interesting to look at the changes in the respective team line-outs. Limerick’s starting line-up in their 2009 All-Ireland Quarter-Final victory over Dublin contained 9 of the team which started the 2007 second replay against Tipperary with all of the defenders from 2007 still in the starting line-up. Meanwhile, Ollie Moran was introduced as a substitute against Dublin and Niall Moran is returning from injury. For Tipperary 6 of the team which lined out in the 2007 second replay defeat to Limerick were also in the starting line-up against Waterford in the 2009 Munster Final with Declan Fanning, Conor O’Mahony, Shane McGrath, James Woodlock, Eoin Kelly and Lar Corbett the players to start both games. Hugh Maloney and Benny Dunne were starters in 2007 and both made appearances as substitutes in the recent Munster Final success while Willie Ryan came on as a substitute in both games.

CROKE PARK EXPERIENCE

Limerick will go in to Sunday’s match relying on a number of players with experience of winning big games in Croke Park. 13 of the 18 players used by Limerick in the All-Ireland Quarter-Final victory over Dublin were involved in Limerick’s Croke Park victories in 2007 over Clare and Waterford on their march to the All-Ireland Final. Tipperary’s 2009 Munster Final winning team had four players in the starting line-up who have won a Senior Championship match in Croke Park, namely Brendan Cummins, Paul Curran Eoin Kelly and Lar Corbett. Benny Dunne, who appeared as a substitute in the Munster Final, also has experience of Croke Park victory with Tipp. In fact, all 5 were involved in Tipperary’s last Senior Championship victory in Croke Park – a 2-16 to 2-11 victory over Offaly in the 2003 All-Ireland Quarter-Final. Cummins, Kelly and Corbett also played on the All Ireland final winning team in 2001 as did panellist Paul Kelly. In addition, 3 of the Munster Final starting line-up – Seamus Callanan, Padraic Maher and Noel McGrath – have experience of winning All-Ireland minor titles in Croke Park as have 7 of their fellow panellists. So both sides on Sunday will have plenty of players who have tasted success in Croke Park!

PARKING AROUND CROKE PARK

Supporters travelling to Sunday’s game in Croke Park are reminded to be careful to park legally if parking in the residential areas around Croke Park. Parking on footpaths or blocking gateways is prohibited and is likely to lead to a fine or vehicles being clamped or towed away. There are plenty of car parks near Croke Park and many of the city centre car parks are offering special rates on production of a match ticket.

ALL IRELAND MINOR HURLING SEMI-FINAL

Hard luck to our minor hurlers and team management on their narrow defeat by Kilkenny in the All Ireland Minor Hurling semi-final played in Croke Park last Sunday. Despite a great and spirited second half comeback, Tipp could not quite get their noses ahead at the end of an enthralling game which they looked destined to lose easily half way through the first half. Well done to all the players, management and others who helped out for all their efforts during the year.

COUNTY BOARD MEETING

There will be a meeting of Tipperary County Board on Tuesday, August 18th at 8pm in the Sarsfields Centre, Thurles.

Bord Snip cuts on Agriculture and the Rural Economy will cost more than savings made

BORD SNIP CUTS ON AGRICULTURE AND THE RURAL ECONOMY WILL COST GOVERNMENT MORE THAN ANY SAVINGS MADE – IFA STUDY

  • Job losses of 12,000+

Drop in output of €430M+

  • Extra burden on Social Welfare budget  €240m+

A detailed economic analysis of the McCarthy proposals carried out by IFA shows that the cuts will lead to job losses of 12,300, a drop in output of €430m and a greater burden on the Social Welfare budget than the savings made by An Bord Snip.

Mr Walshe said the proposed cuts will seriously undermine the positive contribution of agriculture to the rural economy, including a reduction in output for the agri-food sector, an increase in the number of farmers on Farm Assist, a reduction in the number of active farmers and an increase in rural unemployment.

Addressing the media at the Dublin Horse Show today, IFA President Padraig Walshe said the analysis underlined the misguided approach taken by the Government-appointed group. He said, “Our figures clearly show that increased unemployment in the rural economy, coupled with greater numbers applying for Farm Assist, will cost the Exchequer €240m in the form of increased Social Welfare payments. The cuts proposed by An Bord Snip will save the Exchequer just €204m, which is €36m less. The Government has to recognise the futility of the approach set out by Colm McCarthy’s Review Group and abandon the proposals.”

Padraig Walshe said, “this is a particularly difficult time for farm families as prices across all commodities are under pressure. Government support for the agri-food sector will be repaid by maintaining production and output, which in turn will help to increase exports and grow jobs.”

The livestock sector will be particularly impacted by the proposed cuts, where individual farmers are facing cuts of up to 40% in income, through the proposed cuts in REPS, Suckler Cow payments and Disadvantaged Areas. IFA estimates that 20,000 suckler herds will be lost.

In 2008, 75% of all REPS participants were in the drystock and sheep sectors and sheep farming is mainly undertaken in more remote areas of Ireland, highly dependent on the Disadvantaged Areas Payment.

The ewe population is currently 2.1 million. The proposed cuts could result in a reduction, over a period of a number of years, of up to 420,000 animals, or 20% of the national flock.

There are approximately 9,000 dairy farmers in REPS, or slightly below 50% of the total population of 19,000. It is estimated that 20% of Dairy REPS farmers could exit dairy farming, which would result in a reduction of 10% in the total number of Dairy farmers.

The IFA President said farmland in REPS provides a significant carbon sink, absorbing approximately 2.3 million tonnes of CO2e. REPS is of huge benefit to the rural economy, providing employment for farm suppliers of fencing materials and hedging, garden centres, planning consultants and other labour inputs.

With an average payment of €6,200, REPS is a significant support scheme, particularly in the West of Ireland. In Connaught alone, 34% of farmers (20,500) are in REPS.

ALL IRELAND MINOR HURLING SEMI-FINAL

Good luck to our minor hurlers and team management for their All Ireland Minor Hurling semi-final against Kilkenny which will be played in Croke Park on Sunday August 9th at 12 noon. The game will be followed by the All Ireland Football Quarter Final between Mayo and Meath at 2pm and the All Ireland Hurling Semi Final between Kilkenny and Waterford at 4pm. Tipperary and Kilkenny have met in the minor hurling championship on 21 occasions with Tipperary winning 11 times and Kilkenny 10. Tipperary’s last win was in the 2007 semi-final on a scoreline of 1-19 to 2-12. Tipp subsequently went on to win the All Ireland defeating Cork in the final to put back to back titles together. Kilkenny’s last win was in last year’s semi-final when they had a comfortable 3-17 to 1-14 victory before going on to defeat Galway to win the All Ireland title. The other minor semi-final between Galway and Waterford will take place in Croke Park at 1.30pm on Sunday August 16th. For those of you interested in trivia, the last time Tipperary played a minor hurling championship game in Croke Park prior to a Mayo versus Meath football game was on September 29th 1996 when Tipp defeated Galway in the All Ireland minor hurling final replay prior to Meath’s defeat of Mayo in the All Ireland football final replay.

All IRELAND MINOR FOOTBALL QUARTER FINAL

Hard luck to our minor footballers who were defeated by 3-10 to 1-8 by Connaught champions Mayo in the All Ireland Minor Football Quarter Final, played in O’Connor Park, Tullamore, on Monday last. Well done to the players and the management on their efforts throughout the year. The experience gained during the season will no doubt stand all these players well for the future.

TIPPERARY V LIMERCK ALL IRELAND HURLING SEMI-FINAL

The Tipperary v Limerick All Ireland hurling semi-final will take place in Croke Park at 3.30pm on Sunday August 16th. It will be the first time that Tipperary and Limerick will play a senior championship game outside of a Munster venue. The last competitive meeting of Tipperary and Limerick at Croke Park took place on April 25th 1971. The Shannonsiders won a tremendous League play off game, by 2-15 to 1-15 and subsequently beat Tipp by a point in the Final, at Cork, on May 23rd.

TIPP EXIT SENIOR CAMOGIE & LADIES FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Commiserations to the Tipperary senior Camogie team following their exit from the All Ireland championship last weekend after a two point defeat to Cork. They needed to win the game to qualify for the semi-finals. Hard luck also to the ladies footballers whose were defeated by Laois in the first round of the qualifiers.

ALL IRELAND POC FADA

Roscommon’s Gerry Fallon claimed the M Donnelly All-Ireland Poc Fada title on Saturday August 1st, edging out reigning champion, Tipperary goalkeeper Brendan Cummins, by a single poc in testing conditions. Fallon, who was trailing Cummins by two pocs at the last turning point on the 5km mountain course, came home very strongly and claimed the much coveted title. In the pairs event, Fallon and Cummins teamed up and were victorious with 121 pocs. Patricia Jackman from Waterford was a very popular winner of the ladies’ competition, while it was further joy for Roscommon as Noel Fallon claimed the Under-16 title

SYMPATHY

We extend our sympathy to the family of the late JJ McGrath of Boherlahan, who died at the weekend. JJ was a former prominent player with the Boherlahan Dualla club and won a county senior hurling championship medal in 1996. More recently, he served as club secretary. The Boherlahan Dualla v Lorrha and Dorrha O Riain Cup senior hurling championship game which was to be played on Saturday August 1st was postponed as a mark of respect.

We also extend our sympathy to the family of the late Mrs. Mai Maher also of Boherlahan, who died last week. Mrs. Maher was the mother of PJ Maher, former Chairman of the Mid Tipperary GAA Board and currently Insurance Officer of County Board.

Well done to all the clubs who have hosted or will be hosting VHI Cúl Camps over the summer months. Despite the often inclement weather, there has been a great turnout at all the camps held so far. It is a great opportunity for younger players to have fun, to improve their skills and to learn from the excellent coaches attending the camps. Well done to the Coaching and Games Development Committee led by Nicholas Moroney and Dinny Maher for all the work they do to make the camps possible and also to the coaches and the club organisers. It is good to see representatives from the various inter-county panels in Tipperary visiting the camps. Up to 85,000 children will attend almost 1,000 Cúl Camps nationwide during the course of the summer.

Ag Éisteacht Update

A total of seven clubs have been visited across the country as part of the Ag Éisteacht Programme announced at GAA Congress back in April and more visits are planned for the coming weeks and months. The sessions have already proved to be extremely useful informing the GAA President, Christy Cooney, and Ard Stiúrthóir, Padraic Duffy, and the staff at Croke Park of the challenges and obstacles facing the Association and the excellent work being overseen by our units throughout the country. If you think your club would benefit from or would be interested in what is essentially a two hour question and answer session, feel free to make a request by email to: alan.milton@gaa.ie.

CROKE PARK GAA MUSEUM UPDATE

New in the Museum this summer is the Croke Park Timeline. Starting in 1864, the timeline takes museum visitors on a visual journey through the significant events and milestones of the stadium’s rich history. There are some fascinating documents that remind us all of the huge social, cultural and sporting history behind the iconic stadium starting with a sepia-toned map of “Butterly’s Field”. This 21 acre area of land “on the south side of Clonliffe Road in the parish of Saint George and County of Dublin” that Alderman Maurice Butterly purchased back on April 16 1864 is the current site of Croke Park Stadium. Other early significant dates featuring on the timeline include March 15 1896, which marked the first All-Ireland Football and Hurling Finals to be played at Jones’ Road, and the purchase of the site by the GAA in 1913, renaming it Croke Memorial Park. Non-GAA events also feature, with images showing the huge hype and publicity around the July 19 1972 meeting of Muhammad Ali and Al ‘Blue’ Lewis, as well as mention of the first historic first Rugby and Soccer matches in 2007, the Special Olympics in 2003 and U2’s numerous sell-out shows since 1985. The GAA Museum is offering all GAA Clubs a saving of 25% on published list prices from now until December 31st 2009. Booking is essential, and this offer must be quoted at time of booking.

M DONNELLY ALL IRELAND POC FAA 2009

Roscommon’s Gerry Fallon claimed the M Donnely All Ireland Poc Fada title from Tipperarys Brendan Cummins by the narrow margin of one poc. In what was one of the closet contests for many years, and played in extremely demanding conditions, Fallon who was trailing the reigning champion by two pocs at the last turning point on the 5km mountain course, came home strong and claimed the title. In the Comorotas Beirte (All Ireland Pairs) Fallon and Cummins claimed the trophies with a combined total of 121 pocs. Patricia Jackman from Waterford was a very popular winner of the M Donnelly All Ireland Camogie Poc Fada title, whilst it was further joy for Roscommon as Noel Fallon claimed the under 16 title.
